Adaptation Pathways Researcher
The adaptation team at the IIASA is looking to recruit a motivated and talented researcher with expertise in climate change adaptation. The successful candidate will join international and interdisciplinary projects, and focus on analyzing adaptation options, and the development of adaptation pathways for various sectors, with a focus on the European region.
your responsibilities

Perform in-depth research on key adaptation options in several sectors: health, agriculture, water, energy, tourism .
- Contribute to the development of sectoral adaptation pathways.
- Contribute to the conceptualization and analysis of effectiveness of and limits to adaptation.
- Preparation of the related deliverables, reports, stakeholder communication and capacity building activities.
- Contribute to publications in peer-reviewed journals and actively engage in dissemination efforts such as scientific conferences and workshops, stakeholder, and policy events.
your profile
- A master’s degree plus demonstrated professional experience in environmental science, climate change, engineering, geography, economics or a related field.
- Strong quantitative, methodological, and technical skills with a focus on statistical methods and preferably econometrics.
- Experience in programming in R or Python is essential.
- Experience with the CLIMADA model is an asset.
- Experience in using AI and machine learning is an asset.
- A degree of flexibility and willingness to travel.
- Fluency in English and excellent presentation skills.

Appointment terms
The successful candidate should be available to take up the position as of January 2026. We offer an initial fixed-term, full-time employment contract for one year.
Eligible applicants wishing to work part-time hours may be considered.
The place of work is IIASA in Laxenburg, near Vienna Austria (home office options available).
The successful candidate will be appointed as a researcher (R1) in accordance with the.
The position may allow for parallel study for a PhD qualification (external).
