Tenure-Track Professorship in Human Computer Interaction


The position

Human Computer Interaction (HCI) explores the design, evaluation, and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use, as well as the broader social and ethical implications of computer systems. Candidates should have a strong background in computer science or a related discipline and an excellent research record in HCI, as documented by publications in relevant top venues (such as ACM CHI, ACM UIST, CSCW, TOCHI, IEEE VIS, or IEEE TSMC) and by successful acquisition of research grants. We are also welcoming candidates with demonstrated interest and experience in inter- and transdisciplinary research in HCI. Relevant research focus areas include, but are not limited to: Human-centered design and user experience, interactive and intelligent systems, critical computing, sustainability and social justice, collaborative and social computing, mixed, augmented, and virtual reality, affective computing and human-AI interaction, and ethical, societal, artistic and environmental aspects of digital technologies. Candidates should be committed to high-quality teaching in HCI and other general areas in computer science.

The University of Vienna and the Faculty of Computer Science offer a vibrant and prolific research environment for the advertised tenure-track professorship. The appointed assistant professor can build connections to researchers within the faculty in various fields, for instance (depending on the specific research area and research plans of the candidate), in visualization and data analysis, cooperative systems, data mining and machine learning, education, didactics and entertainment computing, or Neuroinformatics. Across faculties, renowned researchers in the social sciences, philosophy, and psychology can offer excellent collaboration opportunities. Also, the Research Network Data Science can facilitate collaborations with other researchers from the University of Vienna. Last, but not least, Vienna, as an internationally recognized center for Digital Humanism, is an ideal place for conducting world-class research in human-computer interaction.

We expect the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German sufficient for teaching in bachelor's programmes and for participation in university committees.


We offer:

the opportunity to obtain a permanent position and eventual promotion to full professor; the initial contract as Assistant Professor is limited to six years, after positive evaluation of a qualification agreement the contract becomes permanent as Associate Professor; Associate Professors can be promoted to Full Professor through an internal competitive procedure
