The Institute for Medieval Research (IMAFO) / Division for Historical Identity Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a

POSTDOC POSITION (F/M/X)

in the field of Late Antique and Early Medieval Multinormativity with the particular focus on the collection and transmission of canon law,

full-time, 40 hours per week,

for a duration of 12 months, starting with 01 September 2025.

Your Tasks

• Conducting independent research on late Antique and early medieval canon law collections; preparing an application of a grant proposal (ERC, FWF, DFG …)
• Engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration and dialogue at the IMAFO and the OeAW with other departments and units
• Support of the work on a grant proposal on “Multinormativity in the Manuscripts: New Approaches and Digital Methodology in Early Medieval History” within the Una Europa framework with the partner institutions FU Berlin, Université de Paris, Panthéon Sorbonne, University of Dublin, University of Edinburgh
• Actively participating in the organization of academic events and joint publications
• Support of public outreach activities and initiatives at the IMAFO

Your Profile

• PhD in late Antique and/or medieval history
• Experience in the study of late Antique and medieval canon law and canon law collections in the Christian West
• Several years of postdoctoral practice within the above outlined field of research
• Training/experience in manuscript studies
• Basic skills in the field of digital humanities
• Fluent in English and German, further language skills or willingness to learn source languages depending on the chosen focus
• Good record of international publications and lectures (corresponding to academic age)
• Flexibility, good communication skills, creativity, ability to work in a team

  The position is awarded on a fixed-term basis. The annual gross salary is currently calculated at EUR 69,028.40, according to the collective agreement of the OeAW
